You know what has been truly humbling to witness this week? JD Vance and Usha Vance embracing JD’s swearing-in as Vice President of the United States as a united front—not just as a couple but as parents and a family. On such a monumental day, they could have easily arranged for a sitter or someone to watch their children. (As a father of a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old, I would not have blamed him.) Instead, they chose to set a powerful example—not just for their kids, but for America.

They’re showing what two working parents can achieve together and proving that success and parenthood aren’t mutually exclusive. They’ve shown us what loving, engaged parenting looks like, even in the midst of immense responsibility. Many of us have seen the videos of their young children experiencing this historic moment, and as a dad myself, I couldn’t help but feel both seen and inspired.

This week, the Vances reminded us that leadership isn’t just about titles or accomplishments—it’s about values, relationships, and leading by example. Their decision to include their children on such a significant day speaks volumes about the kind of leaders and parents they strive to be. It’s a powerful reminder that success doesn’t mean sacrificing what matters most—family.

Reflecting on their example inspires me to lead with the same balance and intention, both professionally and personally. If they can show up for their family while stepping into one of the highest offices in the country, it’s proof that we can all pursue greatness without losing sight of what truly matters. Here’s to leading with heart, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to those we love most.

Family Matters

Leadership is a lot like a 90s sitcom—filled with unexpected twists, the occasional misstep, and plenty of moments where you wonder, “What just happened?” If you’re old enough to remember shows like Family Matters, you know those episodes always came back to one core truth: family comes first. That’s the kind of leadership JD and Usha Vance demonstrated this week. During JD’s swearing-in as Vice President, they made it a family affair—kids and all. They didn’t just show up for the cameras; they showed up for each other. That’s what great leadership looks like.

Sitcom families like the Winslows from Family Matters had a way of teaching life lessons while making us laugh. Leadership today isn’t all that different. It’s about balancing the serious moments with a little humor, staying grounded, and showing that you genuinely care about people. And let’s face it, life would be easier if we all had a wisecracking neighbor like Urkel to lighten the mood when things get tough.

In reality, prioritizing family as a leader doesn’t just build trust—it builds loyalty. It’s about showing your team that what matters to them matters to you. Maybe it’s letting them take a day off to attend their kid’s recital or cutting them some slack when life throws them a curveball. Those little gestures? They go a long way.

At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real. It’s about creating a culture where people know they’re valued as humans first, employees second. Because just like in those 90s sitcoms, the real magic happens when we lead with heart, a little humor, and a whole lot of empathy. Take care of your people, prioritize their families, and you’ll build a culture that everyone wants to be apart of.

And if all else fails, just ask yourself: What would Carl Winslow do?
