Holding It Together

Everyone has had an out-of-body experience at some point.

Everyone has had an out-of-body experience at some point. And if you haven’t, you’re either playing life way too safe or you don’t have kids yet—especially a four-year-old boy.

A month ago, my family and I were at Disney, heading out for a day of making memories. Something as innocent as my son looking out the window at Magic Kingdom turned into five stitches in an instant. When he cried out and clutched his head, I peeled his hand away and saw blood pouring from a deep gash. I could have panicked. I could have frozen. But somehow—through what felt like divine intervention—I stayed calm. My son needed me to be. My daughter and wife needed me to be. So I took charge, handled the situation, and got him the care he needed.

The truth is, you never really know how you’ll react in a crisis until you're in it. How do you prepare for something like that? Maybe you can’t. Maybe you just know—especially with an energetic little boy—that it’s not if, but when.

But how you respond matters. The wrong reaction can take a tough situation and make it ten times worse. Your attitude in the moment can either bring calm or chaos, and in times like that, staying composed is the difference between making it better or making it worse.

Little dude was good as new after a donut from his favorite place. While a WDW trip isn’t where you want to experience an emergency, their customer service is unparalleled. The staff at Disney’s Contemporary Resort took great care of us.

Crisis on the Factory Floor: How Leaders Handle the Unexpected

In manufacturing, just like in life, things go wrong. A machine breaks down, a key employee quits, or a massive order drops at the worst possible time. You don’t always get the luxury of preparation, but you do get to choose how you respond. Panic only makes things worse. The best leaders stay composed, take control, and focus on solutions instead of problems.

When things go sideways, your team is watching. If you lose your cool, so will they. A leader who can assess the situation, make quick decisions, and communicate clearly can turn a crisis into just another challenge to overcome. It’s not about avoiding problems—it’s about being ready to handle them when they show up.

You can’t predict every issue, but you can train your team to be adaptable, prepared, and level-headed under pressure. Whether it’s cross-training employees, having backup plans, or simply leading with confidence, the right mindset can keep a tough situation from becoming a disaster. The question is—how does your team handle the unexpected?
